Therapy Day

Coming May 2012

Take yourself to Therapy Day!

A day in which practicing psychiatrists or therapists will lend a free session of therapy to veterans and the public all around the nation.

Why Therapy Day?

  • In 2007, suicide was the tenth leading cause of death in the United States according to the National Institute of Health.
  • Army suicide rates are higher than the general US population. Psychological conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder which affect tens of thousands of Afghanistan and Iraq War veterans are believed to be worse than government figures. This is in spite of the US military’s campaign to overcome stigma of seeking psychological help.
  • Suicide rates have increased in the general US population in recent months as a result of the economic downtown.
  • African Americans and other people of color have traditionally shunned psychotherapy for many complex reasons. This is in spite of the fact that the experience of racism multiplies existing psychological problems that make living a healthy life difficult.

Purpose of Therapy Day

The purposes of “Take Yourself to Therapy Day”are:

  • To remove the stigma against therapy;
  • To decrease the fear of attending a therapist; and
  • To encourage people of all racial and economic status and backgrounds to seek therapy as needed.

Help us overcome stigma and alleviate fear of psychotherapy as we match the idea of going for therapy to that we have of mainstream health.

Our goal: For 1,000,000 people, including African Americans and veterans with PTSD, to participate in Therapy Day and receive free psychotherapy.
